Lia: Body of Work is a film project that explores multiple themes. It focuses on the act of observation—not the male sexual gaze, but the universal act of looking and watching, with the mirror, camera, and computer serving as central elements. In today's culture, we are compelled to observe and communicate via the internet and cellphones, which Lia leverages to express her own interpretation of beauty and success. The narrative also encourages viewers to reflect on their perceptions of feminine beauty and whether these perceptions are universally shared. This short documentary film project is directed by Susan Weiss.
The work of Susan Weiss primarily revolves around exploring and photographing the human condition. I strive to connect with individuals and capture their lives, documenting what makes them unique. Although the stories are personal, they become her own voice as she photographs and interprets them through her camera lens, transforming their lives into her art.
This interest in distinct lives and their fragility inspires her creations.
"Lia: Body of Work" is the second part of a series detailing the struggles of a female bodybuilder. The Lia series tells the story of a driven and resolute woman aiming to compete in a professional tournament. Her method involves engaging deeply with the subject to establish a trusting relationship, fostering an environment where they feel at ease around her. For this project, she started photographing at the beginning of her training in June 2022, spending significant time with her both in the gym and beyond. Eventually, she joined Lia and her husband in San Antonio for the competition, capturing her journey throughout. The second film is set in 2024 when Lia makes decisions about ending her career and the reasons behind those choices.
Initially, Susan was unfamiliar with her career path and did not understand it. However, over time, she grew to respect her work ethic and developed a profound admiration for her. She had to confront her cultural assumptions and stereotypes about her world. The process of learning about others' lives and experiences captivates her creatively. It also mirrors her personal journey of meeting and working with strangers, finding common ground and friendship. She discovered similarities with Lia in her commitment to training and my newfound understanding of her sport, compared to her focus on documentary work.
