Leading Hollywood Sales Agent Discloses Major Indie Film Hurdle: “We’re Creating Movies for Streaming Platforms”
FilmNation head Glen Basner highlights the challenge in indie film distribution as a reliance on traditional packaging, where specific actors and directors are expected to guarantee financial success. This has led film buyers to sell titles to pay TV and streaming platforms to mitigate risk. Basner suggests a more holistic approach, creating films that succeed across various platforms and markets. He emphasizes that while a big-name actor is beneficial, it's not the sole key to success. The goal is to make compelling films for theaters, which will also perform well on other platforms.

Roeg Sutherland from CAA agrees that indie film buyers need strategies to access global markets and new financing to complete budgets. He notes a disconnect between what works in North America and internationally, especially for pay TV deals. Sutherland points out that pre-selling a significant portion of a film's budget at festivals is no longer feasible, requiring creative financing solutions.
Sutherland also supports theatrical exhibitors entering distribution but notes success has been limited to concert films. Basner remains optimistic about the theatrical box office through 2026, despite challenges like AI and shorter theatrical windows. He sees a vibrant future for unique storytelling in theaters, as filmmakers continue to engage audiences with their distinct perspectives.
